Jason Day’s 59 chip, falls short — BMW Championship

Round of the day: Dustin Johnson was slow out of the gates, turning in an even-par 71 in the opening round, but he caught fire in Round 2.

The New South Welshman, who needs to move up from 33rd on the season-long points list into the top 30 if he is to make it to the Tour Championship, had to lift.

Citing the conditions, the length of Conway Farms (it played at 6,892 yards Friday) and the number of par-4 holes reachable with a driver, “the par for us out here should be 67 or 66”, added McIlroy, who shot 65 and called it only “a decent score”.

And that’s when the light came on for Day.

“To be honest, I thought it was par 72”. Now he does.

There are other permutations should Day finish second or tie for second.

“If it goes in, it goes in, ” he said.

“I feel very free, like there’s no stress and there’s obviously stress”.

“I just had to get something going”.

He is now ranked 22nd in the FedEx Cup standings. I don’t know, it’s hard to… The man has lost his mind. “But once again, today is finally done, and I can start focusing on (Saturday) and trying to focus on what I need to do to play well”. “I can’t answer it”. That’s because he had to win, and he was never really in the hunt.

Charley Hull says the Solheim Cup is “just a golf event” and explained she won’t be getting stressed out about the biennial matchplay tournament.

Another day one highlight was Jordan Spieth’s hole-in-one, propelling him to an opening round 65.

The latest incredible feat by Day – who has won three of his last five tournaments, including his first major at the PGA Championship – is the only thing keeping the third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs from having a tight leaderboard. They already were friendly in the first place.

Day was confused, thinking Conway Farms was playing to a par of 72, not 71.

He two-putted the ninth – his final hole – for a career-best 10-under 61.

“I feel like I should be paying to come watch some of this”, said Spieth, tied for fifth at 11 under.

“But I’ve got two more days left”. “Are you playing a different golf course?” Spieth said. “You’re asking him THAT?” Using a 7-iron, Spieth delivered a monster 186 yard shot. Quite. His tee shot on the 196-yard par-3 second landed within six feet.

David Lingmerth (Arkansas Razorbacks) was one over through 14 holes before play was halted.

Day then turned around and backed it up with a sizzling second-round 63, finishing with a 43-foot eagle putt on the last.

It's all smiles for Jason Day right now
