Former Auburn All-American and current Auburn men’s golf volunteer coach Jason Dufner won the CareerBuilder Challenge by defeating David Lingmerth with a par on the second hole of a playoff on Sunday at the PGA West TPC Stadium Course. Instead, it settled into a small sandy area between some of the tangled rocks that circle the green.

He claimed his fourth PGA Tour title with a par on the second extra hole after Sweden’s David Lingmerth sent his second shot into the water. He opted to putt, but came up short and then missed a short putt to record his first bogey of the tournament. He was unable to salvage a bogey, as Dufner two-putted for a winning par.

“It’s been a good three days”, Mickelson said.

“I’m excited, this was a really good week for me to prove I’m on the right track”, Mickelson said on Golf Channel.

“I had a lot of fun going toe to toe with Thomas Pieters”, Fowler said as he held the Falcon Trophy near the 18th green. “I’m just playing golf like you should”. Unable to reach the green, he blasted out 100 yards to set up a 110-yard third shot that he hit to 11 feet.

During the regulation play, Lingmerth, who was five strokes behind World No. 120 Dufner till the third round, scored 65 to take his total to 25-under 263 – same as the American. I’m playing the way I want. Lahiri missed birdie putts inside 10 feet on at least four occasions on the first, fourth, 10th and par-5 16th. “I’m just trying to hit each shot as good as I can and not let results and outcome dictate how I feel or how I think out there….”

Idyllwild native and Hemet High graduate Brendan Steele, who flirted with getting into the top 10 following his runner-up finish a year ago, faded with a 2-over 74 and tied for 34th at 13 under.

“I’m probably a week away”, he said.

Also the site of the final round Sunday, the Pete Dye-designed course finally got another chance this year out of necessity when PGA West’s Palmer and Nicklaus private layouts dropped out.

The Moose Jaw, Sask., native made quite a splash on Saturday, registering a sizzling 29 on the front nine on the Nicklaus Tournament Course at La Quinta Country Club, highlighted by an eagle and five birdies.

Phil Mickelson was tied for fifth at 17 under in his first start since the Presidents Cup in October. I got a great break and sometimes those things happen and you need them to happen to win. Next week, Lefty will tee it up at the Northern Trust Open from Torrey Pines in his home town of San Diego.

Dufner plays from the rocks on the 17th hole to save an unlikely par and force a play-off
