Jason Garrett on Tony Romo: We’ll take the situation day by day
Is it over if Prescott plays well enough? Jared Goff will be able to learn a lot quicker when his team is winning games instead of losing them, but this doesn’t mean that Prescott won’t be a great QB for the Cowboys. They will trim their roster from 90 to 75 players on August 30th and from 75 to 53 by September 3rd. Tony Romo was injured just 3 plays into the first offensive possession and with injury after injury, this could be the shot Dallas has wanted to test out the eventual future of the franchise (granted an injury is never a good reason to do so). His latest injury occurred on the third play of Thursday night’s exhibition game at Seattle. He was crunched by Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril from the blind side.

While it’s true Romo needs to be anxious about his long-term health, it’s also true Romo is a warrior and probably isn’t thinking about anything besides getting back on the field. His injury is a compression fracture of L1 vertebrae.
The Cowboys open the season with a pair of division games. The good news is that he will not be out for the season. The early estimates have Romo out six to 10 weeks; six weeks would put his return in early October.
Garrett did not rule Romo out for the opener against the Giants, but reports are rampant that Romo will miss 6-10 weeks, and it is safe to assume he will not be suiting up to face the Giants in 16 days.
That’s Garrett’s nature, but the Cowboys will start rookie Dak Prescott against the Giants, barring an unexpectedly quick recovery.
Dez Bryant and Tony Romo played one full game together previous year. Rookie Dak Prescott, a fourth-round pick who has had a strong preseason, is the presumed starter, although Garrett wouldn’t acknowledge that either. But there’s a huge difference between starring for Mississippi State and against backup defenses, and leading one of the most tense teams in the National Football League in a division that’s better than it was a year ago. The injury will not require surgery.
Romo underwent a pair of back surgeries in 2013 and he missed most of last season with a twice-broken left collarbone. Luckily for Cowboys fans, Dallas’ front office seems to have found a diamond in the fourth-round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Reports suggest Romo could miss around half of the upcoming National Football League season but Garrett told the team’s website: “We’re going to monitor his condition day by day and we’ll see how he feels going forward”.
