Trott set the second fastest time in the 500m time trial to lead on 156 points, ahead of Jolien D’Hoore (144) and Sarah Hammer (140).

The 24-year-old from Cheshunt who won team pursuit gold on Saturday, successfully defended the title she won at London 2012. Kenny has two more Games in him.

Australia came to Rio with realistic expectations of two or three gold on the track. “I’d love her to bits even if she was rubbish, but she’s not”.

Wedding planning was a welcome distraction for Laura Trott as she became Great Britain’s most successful female Olympian.

“I turned up in a amusing mood, I was happy, I don’t know what was wrong today”, he told the BBC after enduring that the cycling programme ended with yet more success for Team GB.

“I’m so happy it all came together and I want to thank all the people back home you don’t see behind the scenes”.

Her team had also improved their track cycles, she said: “It’s just a step above everybody else’s”. I would hate to think that we had half-committed and then it didn’t happen for us.

Both Becky James, the keirin silver medallist, and Katy Marchant made it into the women’s sprint semi-finals.
