First-year player Jameill Showers is the only other quarterback on the current roster, although Dallas is expected to add an experienced veteran before the September 11 season opener at home against the New York Giants.

I don’t think there is any better opportunity than what you would get with Dak coming in next weekend, so it’s an exciting time, and here we go with the National Football League and a back up quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.
Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said quarterback Dak Prescott is not expected to play against Houston.
The question the team has to answer is whether he’ll remain on the active roster until he’s cleared to return to action from a broken bone in his back or if they’ll place him on injured reserve before restoring him to active duty. Davis was the fourth quarterback on Cleveland’s depth chart in this summer and was granted his release on Monday. Davis spent his first three seasons with the St. Louis Rams.
Prescott has been nothing less than stunning passing for 454 yards and five touchdowns in three partial games. “He’s done some good things”.
There is no scenario the Cowboys are considering in which Romo won’t return at all. But the reality is, Tony’s going to come back for us and play great, we believe. It’s unfortunate for Tony that he’s has some of these things but I think the last thing in the world we’re anxious about with Tony is being fragile. “I always knew he would be successful, but it is impressive to see him play so well so early”.
If Romo were to go on injured reserve, he’d be out for at least the first eight weeks of the regular season but the Cowboys would be able to keep a player who can help them while Romo recuperates.
Prescott won’t play in Thursday’s preseason finale against Houston. Noteworthy is the 78 percent completion rate and the fact he’s added a couple of rushing touchdowns.

Jones said they’ll make the call on it sometime over the weekend, because, regardless of how they handle it, Romo will have to be part of the 53-man roster initially. The Cowboys’ backup quarterbacks were 1-11 last season. They could hold out hope for Romo to return sooner, not put him on injured reserve, and then get nothing for it.
