Elsewhere, the Washington Nationals turned the first triple play in their 12-season history, holding on in the eighth inning to help preserve a strong outing by Max Scherzer and beat the San Francisco Giants 4-1.

TIGERS 14, ASTROS 6: Tyler Collins and Justin Upton each hit a three-run homer to lead host Detroit to its fourth straight win. The defending American League East champions moved a half-game ahead of the Orioles for the division lead, as a crowd of 47,305 celebrated.

“It means that we’re playing good baseball”, Martin said. “But I still feel I can give the team quality innings”. “If you want to be on a winning team, one of the main things you want to have is pitching”.

“We have some guys with a lot of experience, some big-time veteran relievers, and it just made the team that much better, ” Estrada said.

With the way Gallardo had dominated the Blue Jays in the past, it looked like they had blown a meaningful opportunity in the first inning.

Odorizzi (5-5) struck out five and allowed six hits over 62/3 innings. That team total includes the 3.47 ERA over 132.1 innings delivered by ace Chris Tillman, and man would they be knee-deep in doo-doo if not for him.

Kevin Pillar piled on, doubling down the left-field line to give the Blue Jays a seven-run inning in the sixth. Days like today are ideal.

“We know we’re going to have to score more than one but Happ didn’t make that possible”, Showalter said.

Over on the Blue Jays’ side, we’ll be seeing right-hander Aaron Sanchez on the mound.

Meanwhile, Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ held the Orioles to just three hits over seven innings, their only run coming on designated hitter Pedro Alvarez’s solo homer in the second inning.

“I thought Marco was a little bit off with his command”, manager John Gibbons said. “I felt bad for (catcher Matt) Wieters, I was just kind of beating him up back there”. “We were able to put some good at-bats together and get some runs”. And while nothing should be taken granted against an offence as powerful as the Orioles’, the game was effectively over at that point. Pillar added another two-run double in the seventh for good measure.

Gibbons then dropped the theoretical aspect to the question.

“Im really happy I hit that number, ” Encarnacion said through an interpreter after the game.

Happ left to a standing ovation after allowing a leadoff single to J.J. Hardy in the eighth, and Joe Biagini allowed a pair of dinky base hits to load the bases with none out. Machado, who had taken second, made a decision to sprint for third, which wasn’t covered.

HUSTLE RUN: Manny Machado scored all the way from first base on an infield out by Chris Davis in the third. He also is 1-0 with a 3.60 in the playoffs after starting against them in the 2015 American League Division Series when he was with the Texas Rangers.
