Jays starter Boyd leaves without recording an out

The Sox took the first two games of this series with some solid pitching, but that was not the case in game 3 yesterday as the Blue Jays pounded out 16 hits on their way to an 11-2 win. He’s the sixth Blue Jays player to achieve the feat.

In danger of cooling down as the Red Sox racked up runs in the first, Miley played catch in the area outside the Red Sox clubhouse beneath the first base stands. This was especially painful after the Jays lost a challenge earlier in the inning to Boston when catcher Russell Martin was ruled out by the replay crew after initially being called safe at first. Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (4-2) allowed four hits, two walks and one run with four strikeouts in six innings, helping Boston beat Toronto for the second game in a row to start a four-game series.

Those three runs made it 11-4 and even the Jays penchant for big rallies seemed a long shot at that point. Three walks and four hits, including a two run single by Jose Bautista, cut the lead to 8-4.

“I had really no fastball command”, said Miley, who had a 3.30 ERA in June. The Red Sox also honored Canada Day with a Canadian flag on the right sleeve of their jerseys. De Aza scored on a Mookie Betts single and Xander Bogaerts later brought Hanigan across on an infield single. And in the fifth the only thing that kept the Jays from pushing across a run was a questionable play at home plate, with Mookie Betts getting a ground ball single from Devon Travis back in to Ryan Hanigan not in time to get Danny Valencia before he reached home, but in plenty of time to tag him when he apparently failed to touch home on the way by.

Gibbons was ejected in the fifth inning after an argument with home plate umpire Gerry Davis. Betts’ second single of the inning made it 8-0.

Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson also hit home runs for Toronto (42-38), ending a small two-game skid. When playing as the favorite, the Blue Jays have a 25-17 record and overall money line at -14. “They were hitting everything he threw up there”.

Starters with big leads are supposed to be in attack mode, but Wade Miley couldn’t find the strike zone, walking seven and allowing seven hits. Pillar lined out to left fielder H.Ramirez.

Red Sox seventh. H.Ramirez tripled to center. He split last season between the Red Sox and Chicago Cubs after spending his first four big-league seasons with Boston. On June 20, they were ten games out. It is almost a miracle that he only let up four runs and he can count his blessings that he got run support.

Colabello batted with the bases loaded again in the fourth but struck out to end the inning.

“We’ll get him back in”, Gibbons said.

And despite Wade Miley’s best efforts to give it all back with seven walks over five innings, the Jays never recovered. Limiting the damage except for the second was the reason he was able to squeak by. Right-hander Alexi Ogando replaced Layne and retired all four hitters that he faced.

The first inning was relatively uneventful, with only a two-out walk issued.

As it would happen, he lasted through five, and didn’t allow another run. The Red Sox scored eight runs before Miley pitched, and then he gave back half of the lead in the second inning.
