Jays’ Tulowitzki hit by pitch, fractures thumb

The Orioles’ bullpen kept the Blue Jays bats in check and second baseman Jonathan Schoop broke a 2-2 tie with his 11th game-winning RBI of the season, hitting a run-scoring single off Blue Jays left-hander Franklin Morales with one out in the 12th to score Pedro Alvarez from second base.

In his first four starts in July, Tillman went seven innings in each and allowed exactly one run in every one of them.

“He hit his spots pretty well today”, Baltimore’s Mark Trumbo said.

“It’s a little sore”, said Tulowitzki. It’s blown up, that’s all I can say right now. The shortstop hopes to avoid the disabled list and will test his hand to see if he can hold a bat before making a decision. “We’ll see how long it takes, hopefully not too long”.

Tulowitzki led off the fourth inning with a massive solo shot that smacked off the facade of the fifth deck in left, an estimated 433 feet. In his next at-bat he was hit by Tillman, raising the question if the Orioles starter pitched him high and up on objective. You’ve just got to have a really good outing by your starter in order to compete and take your chance at the end.

I believe with Jose Bautista back in the lineup, things are going to get better for the team. “I don’t think by any means they were trying to hit me”.

RANGERS 5, ROYALS 3 (at Arlington, Texas) – Mitch Moreland homered for the fifth time in his past five starts and Lucas Harrell won in his Texas debut to finish a sweep of the four-game series. His homer on Sunday was his 18th of the season and 10th since coming off the DL.

Mychael Givens (8-1) worked one inning for the victory as the Orioles won for the first time in six games at Toronto. Two-time home run champ Chris Davis has been experiencing perhaps his worst slump ever; he simply hasn’t been able to hit much of anything.

In the bottom of the 12th, Jason Heyward led off and hit a double, then advanced to third on Contreras’ fly ball.

Alvarez scored when Schoop singled to left with one out.

Josh Donaldson had two singles and walked twice before being replaced by pinch-runner Darwin Barney in the eighth. Adam Jones crushed his first pitch for a three-run homer to left-centre field. Sanchez is 11-1 with an American League-low 2.72 earned-run average in 132 1/3 innings so far this year.

Boston’s Dustin Pedroia hit a go-ahead, three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Red Sox past the Los Angeles Angels 5-3.

Rays 6, Yankees 3: Drew Smyly struck out Alex Rodriguez three times en route to stopping an 11-start winless streak.

Sonny Gray (5-10) gave up seven runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Sanchez’s seven innings Sunday gave him a new career high in innings, 139.1.

Baltimore closer Zach Britton pitched a scoreless ninth and 10th before Mychal Givens did the same in the 11th.

Sanchez has been a revelation as a starting pitcher for the Blue Jays.

Sounds like he’s sending a message to the front office that he wants to remain in the rotation. He was 5-0 against them, including a playoff win past year. Santiago Casilla pitched the ninth for his 23rd save.

“We came here in first place and we are going to try to maintain it”, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. In his last start against the Colorado Rockies, however, he allowed six runs, which was tied for a season high. Trumbo jogged in to second.

The end of July 2015 was an exciting time for the Blue Jays and their fans with several trades made to bolster the team's drive to the AL East division title
