But it can be easy to forget, men can get breast cancer too.

Cheerleaders at Florida’s Tampa Bay Tech raised money a year ago to buy special pink uniforms for Breast Cancer Awareness Month – and the the 18-member team donned their outfits at every October football game last season.

His mother, Sandra Kay Hill, passed away from breast cancer in May 2014, and he’s glad to have the opportunity to honor not only his mother but also four of his aunts, who sadly died of breast cancer as well.

While Williams won’t be able to wear pink accessories on the field, the running back did dye parts of his hair pink and is allowed to sport the look, so far.

“Only when we have the full picture about the numbers living with the disease can we make informed decisions to ensure care services are planned effectively and that everyone affected by secondary breast cancer gets the support they need from day one”. Troy Vincent, the league’s vice-president, told Williams over the phone that wearing pink does not fit with NFL uniform regulation policy.

“Men are typically diagnosed with larger tumors”, said Tuszka, “and with larger tumors you may have more involvement in the lymph nodes, and disease elsewhere”.

“We’re about early detection, we know that when women do detect breast cancer early, their five year survival rate is 90 percent”, said Elizabeth Benavides. To cut down on the risk for breast cancer, Fisher recommends maintaining a healthy body weight, limiting alcohol intake, and regular exercise.

It’s October. That means three things: pumpkin-everything, Halloween and the color pink – everywhere. Thanks to better screening practices and the development of new treatments, breast cancer death rates have fallen by an average 1.9 percent each year over 2002 to 2011.

“I saw it on social media that October was Breast Cancer Awareness month, and I was thinking how can we help out as a staff and how can we help out for a good cause”, Luna said.
