The attack occurred in the Kupwara district, near the frontier border with Pakistan some 77 miles northwest of Srinigar, the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir.
The JCO was hit by a Pakistani sniper near the LoC in Nowgam sector and later succumbed to injuries, an army spokesman said in Srinagar.
Meanwhile, a gunfight between security forces and militants was on in Lasipora forest area near the LoC in north Kashmir’s Uri sector, officials said.
On Tuesday, a gratuitous firing by the Pakistani troops killed an Indian soldier.
Army troops guarding the border responded effectively and appropriately, the spokesman said.
