JD Martinez Nails Jay Bruce At The Plate To End Game

All season, New York Mets have struggled to find its identity and an ace on the mound. Casey McGehee slapped a grounder that deflected off first baseman James Loney and into shallow right field.

NY will send right-hander Logan Verrett out to face Detroit for the first time when he starts Saturday night against the Tigers.

Aviles came into the game in the fifth after Nick Castellanos left with a non-displaced fracture of his left hand. Kinsler hit a high chopper that he was able to beat out for an infield single, allowing Upton to score and tie the game at one.

That decision paid off when Travis d’Arnaud poked a single right to him.

One inning after the Detroit Tigers ran themselves out the go-ahead run, Neil Walker hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift the New York Mets to a 3-1 win over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.

“I was kind of in a way anticipating it a little bit. I love this game and I love this team”, the 41-year-old Rodriguez said, often choking up.

The next half inning, Rodriguez – pitching for the third time in as many days – hit the lead-off batter, Alejandro De Aza, and allowed a two-run home run to Walker, a blast deep above the out-of-town scoreboard in right-centerfield.

“J.D. picked me up big time”, Rodriguez said. “I guess when everything’s going well, you catch those types of breaks”. Jones and Machado are now in Toledo playing for the Mud Hens. Coming off a 3-1 loss in San Francisco on Sunday, Gonzalez (7-9) struck out seven, walked one and had five three-up, three-down innings.

After Bruce’s fourth-inning homer tied the game at 1, the Tigers answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Before being called up, he was hitting.322 with five home runs, 49 runs batted in, and 37 doubles.

In the eighth, Detroit again had runners on first and second with two outs. Then the Tigers put men on first and second with two outs in the eighth. With one out he went on to steal second and third base. He smashed a game-winning, pinch-hit home run against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday and threw out the potential game-tying run in the ninth inning on Saturday against the Mets.

The teams play the second game in their weekend series Saturday evening, with Matt Boyd (2-2, 4.71) facing New York’s Logan Verrett (3-6, 4.20).

The Tigers’ ace played it over and over against the Mets – that short slider, or cutter, changing speeds easily – in pitching his team back into the win column, 4-3, tonight at Comerica Park.

Sanchez pitched his best game of the season, allowing four hits and striking out 10 while throwing 100 pitches over eight innings.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus defended Martinez after the game, calling it a tough read for his right fielder. “Hopefully we’ll hit our stride soon, and [today] will be a good off-day”.

“That’s the most important thing this time of year – try to get on a roll, try to get hot – and that’s what we’re looking for”, Walker said. “If we’re going to get into the post-season, he’s got to be a part of it.’ So it’s nice to see him start swinging”. Unfortunately, Jordan Zimmermann is back on the DL, but Daniel Norris will return to the rotation next week to replace him.

The Mets had nothing to lose by challenging the final play at the plate, but they were satisfied that Bruce was indeed out and didn’t ask for a review.
