Jean-Claude Juncker issues warning to Ireland over Apple tax ruling
He called on Beijing to accept a monitoring mechanism for overproduction that Beijing’s trading partners blame for low prices and job losses, adding that it was “unacceptable” that the European steel industry had lost so many jobs in recent years.

“Given the mandate” which the EU member states have given to the Commission “we will continue to negotiate with the US” this treaty with “positive effects” to the economy and jobs, said the European official despite the latest criticism in the French and German governments. Chinese officials say they want the G-20, created to coordinate the response to the 2008 financial crisis, to take on a longer-term regulatory role. No they don’t. The second part is more complicated and it revolves around whether the European Commission has over-reached its locus by attempting to unduly influence the taxation polices of a member state, when taxation remains a sovereign issue. China has also launched the strongest policies to address the problem.
“Companies must now more than ever carefully assess whether any agreements or rulings they receive from national tax authorities are compliant with state aid principles”. But Mr. Dijsselbloem said there was no need for a transatlantic “tax war”, and called for the strengthening of global standards.
The Commission will not say when a decision is likely on two outstanding cases involving two more US firms, Amazon and McDonald’s, both in Luxembourg. “We are really insisting on the need to take this seriously”. “We are basing our decisions on facts and the legislation that applies here”.
“We need to find a way to make the global system of taxation more fair – more fair to countries around the world, particularly countries like the United States”, he said.
It’s now a bit rum for Ireland to start claiming that in the Apple case, the European Union has overstepped the mark and is interfering in its sovereign rights.
A number of G20 governments are anxious about how multinationals move profits around so they end up getting taxed in a country that has very low corporate rates.
“And the U.S. government is not going to hesitate to speak out in support of USA companies that are looking to do business around the world”. Last week, the U.S. Treasury issued a detailed paper denouncing the investigation and warning of dire implications should the commission rule against Apple.
It is crucial we negotiate the best trade links possible for our future relationship with the EU.
