Jeb Bush takes on Donald Trump, the ‘dead star’
The fault lines reflect a party still in flux long after George W. Bush’s unpopular Iraq war damaged Republicans’ standing on worldwide issues. It was the first Republican debate since the attacks on Paris and San Bernardino. Trump delivered a verbal slapping, pointing out to Bush that polls showed “I’m at 42 and you’re at 3”, noting that Bush was edging closer to the edge of the stage in each debate. Trump and Cruz restored their non-aggression pact, reflecting their status as the two strongest candidates going into the new year.

The OpinionSavvy survey of 555 likely primary voters, all contacted Wednesday, found Trump with 29.7 percent support. At a Republican Party of Florida event at the Intercontinental Hotel in Tampa last week, Bush went on such an anti-Trump tear that Bush advisers were shocked it didn’t leak. But then he played the fear-monger by attacking Rubio’s half-hearted push for immigration reform, which he contended weakened our national defense.
One of the most striking contrasts between the senators centered on how aggressive the US should be in seeking to topple Middle East dictators, some of whom have been bulwarks against Islamic extremists.
But the biggest dispute between Cruz and Rubio is over the two-year-old immigration bill that would have given undocumented immigrants a path to gaining USA citizenship. Instead, Cruz clashed repeatedly with Sen. Rand Paul, who both said the US has higher priorities than ousting Assad. Well, Rubio says it was an important tool for investigators. And Rubio is spending the next several days campaigning in Iowa. Cruz is not, but being a member of the Senate gives him access to some classified information. And today, he said he likes everyone on the Republican side, but Rubio stresses there are differences. But before the new law’s passage in June, intelligence officials held classified briefings with lawmakers to discuss the legislation. While the government has lost speed and ability to reach back in time, it has gained volume of coverage.
His debating style has many in West Michigan fired up, but a political science professor at WMU says Trump is a serious candidate. Whether voters will take a chance on another one-term senator whose previous experience, like Obama, was in state legislature is, itself, a matter up for debate that won’t be settled until the first votes are cast.
Graham also believes he came armed with the best one-liners of any candidate. “They were not telling the truth”, he said.

As my Washington Post colleague Janell Ross pointed out, every tool of foreign policy other than force – aid, economics, diplomacy, democracy promotion – got short shrift on Tuesday. If he were pulling 15 percent in some polls and had no contentious history with Trump, people might read this as a significant act of principled objection to a guy who, let’s face it, isn’t conservative.
