The deputy was identified as David F. Michel Jr., WDSU reported.
Reports of an “officer down” came in around 12:25 p.m. near Manhattan and Lapalco Boulevards. The suspect was being treated at a hospital for non life-threatening injuries, Fortunato said.
Deputies arrested one suspect shortly after the shooting. The officer, assigned to a street crimes unit, died at a local hospital.
Jefferson Parish is near New Orleans.

A suspect was taken into custody after a manhunt by law-enforcement officials, but he has not been identified.
Neveaux has been charged with first-degree murder and assault, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
“Deputy Michel, while patrolling in Manhattan corridor and the Pebble Walk subdivision, noticed an individual following behind someone else and appeared to be nervous”, Normand said.
Col. John Fortunato, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s spokesman, announced the officer’s death as police flooded a nearby neighborhood, searching for the suspect by helicopter and combing the area with dogs. Then officers rushed in and detained him in the backyard.
Stephen Arnold was shot five times as he and others were trying to serve a warrant as part of a Drug Enforcement Administration raid on a house.
A search was underway for one suspect, but possibly one more.
