Jem Gets a Solo Contract in New ‘Jem and the Holograms’ Trailer

The droid resembles Star Wars’ ball droid BB-8, with a personality akin to the alien robot Echo from the family film Earth to Echo.

‘What are you working on?’ an off-camera young Jerrica asks her dad as the trailer opens, in a home video recorded all the way back in 1999.

In a contemporary twist, the movie’s heroine, Jerrica Benton (Aubrey Peeples) finds herself catapulted to global pop superstardom via YouTube.

Looks like it’s “Showtime, Synergy!”

Fans of the original were unsettled when the first trailer released in May appeared to be a straightforward “singer gets discovered” movie, with none of the off-the-wall sci-fi elements or dastardly plots. What we do have instead is Jem and her band becoming Internet famous without the aid of Synergy and her trying to separate from the band to pursue a solo career. Synergy is the device Jem gets her powers of illusion from.

Still no sign of the evil rival band The Misfits though. Now if you told me that Jem and the Holograms is actually a two-hour Google commercial brainstormed en route to a Frisbee Golf tournament in Union Square, I wouldn’t even ask for the Uber receipts.
