Lifted from the pages of Jason Matthews’ novel of the same name, the studio’s big-screen take on the author’s spy thriller has been simmering in development for some time, with various directors and stars entering and leaving the project in what soon became one of Hollywood’s revolving doors.

The deal is yet to go through but both Lawrences are thought to have been approached for the adaptation.

In today’s Russian Federation, intelligence officer Dominika Egorova struggles to survive in the post-Soviet bureaucracy. The two have collaborated on the last three films in The Hunger Games franchise, including the highly anticipated forthcoming and final installment, Mockingjay – Part 2. Gone Girl director David Fincher and actress Rooney Mara were once attached to the project, but those plans fell through.

Justin Haythe (Snitch, The Lone Ranger) has come aboard to rewrite the adapted script, which was originally written by Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle, The International). based on the novel by Jason Matthews.

Red Sparrow” is set in contemporary Russian Federation and centers on a state intelligence officer named Dominika Egorova who is assigned against her will to become a “Sparrow”, a trained seductress in the service. Dominika eventually ends up being recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency herself, beginning a fateful double life in which she is forced to track down one of her country’s own moles. “Although Lawrence is busy with her work schedule, she still wants to see more of Martin but somehow their schedules couldn’t meet all the time because Martin would be somewhere doing something else”. It will be produced by Steven Zaillian and Garrett Basch.
