Who came out ahead in the Oscar race?

In what may have been the worst Golden Globes awards show ever, LGBT fans were dealt a double blow as the biggest LGBT awards contenders missed out on the big prizes.

“Carol”:The film came into the Golden Globes Sunday with more nominations than any other movie, but walked away empty-handed.

Lady Gaga has promised to release a new album in 2016. “Not even Sean Penn will be able to find me”.

Gervais spared little time before laying into the HFPA and the awards’ network, NBC, which he noted had no nominations. Since he last hosted, “I’ve changed”, Gervais said. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. To have her up there and just sing praises was great. “She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can you?”

Gervais and Mel Gibson had an awkward moment on stage halfway through the evening. Larson is a Golden Globes virgin.

There were big surprises on the TV side as well, as shows with relatively small audiences scored big, including Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle”, which earned Globes for best comedy series and for its star, Gael Garcia Bernal, and the USA Network’s “Mr. Robot”, which earned best drama series and an award for supporting actor Christian Slater.

In a closely-contested men’s field, DiCaprio prevailed over “The Danish Girl” star Eddie Redmayne and “Concussion” lead Will Smith, to win best actor for his role as a fur-trapper seeking retribution.

Referencing the Globes ceremony, he added, it is “a bit of metal that some nice, old, confused journalists want to give you to meet you and take a selfie with you”.

DiCaprio won a Globe himself for his harrowing performance in the gritty film Revenant. There is nobody more deserving of that trust than Alejandro Inarritu. “But, it was one of the most profound filmmaking experiences I think we’ve all had”.

It was then Gervais asked for the definitition of “sugar tits”.

Lawrence, who spent much of the night with her new friend and collaborator Amy Schumer (herself a nominee for Trainwreck), scored her third Globe for a David O. Russell-directed film. “When Ricky Gervais hosts an awards show, you pretty much know what you’re gonna get. I mean that as a compliment”. Those who get neither reduce their chances, but this year’s SAG noms are odd enough to offer some unpredictability.

Sylvester Stallone won best supporting actor for the “Rocky” sequel-reboot “Creed”. (He stepped back onto the stage during the commercial break to thank them.) MGM is working on assembling a sequel, but Stallone may be running that show. It is also expected to win at the Oscars.

Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz, and best animated film went to Pixar’s acclaimed “Inside Out”. “It was a long time ago and a different situation”. “Let us not forget this human face”, he said of his film’s subject, the Holocaust.
