Jenson Button drops hints about encouraging McLaren future

It’s worth pointing out as well that Haas hope to announce their drivers before the end of the summer, and Magnussen indicated that he won’t be with the team in Singapore, perhaps because his immediate future lies elsewhere.

McLaren-Honda Formula 1 team reserve driver Kevin Magnussen has broken his hand in a cycling accident.

McLaren’s racing director, Éric Boullier, has said McLaren intend to take up their option on retaining Button but that the decision will be made by Ron Dennis, the group’s chief executive and chairman.

The pair were teammates for three seasons at team McLaren before Hamilton joined Mercedes in a move which, although considered a gamble at the time, has proved to be a career-defining masterstroke.

“If I’m in F1, it will be with this team”. “I still believe I am in the right place in the future”.

At the Australian Grand Prix this year he was recalled to the McLaren team for duty, replacing Fernando Alonso who was still recovering from a pre-season concussion. This year, however, he is languishing in 15th spot with McLaren.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Button said: “Lewis is extremely fast over one lap, probably one of the quickest ever”.

“For everyone it’s been a really tough season”.

Known as the fittest man in the pit lane, Button said he finds his joy in the pursuit of physical power – from intensive strength work in the gym to conquering grueling triathlons.

“I do rant, in private”. I got understeer when I put new tyres on, and you just can’t put enough front wing on to help that. But everyone’s stayed positive and got their heads down.

“When I’m at the circuit, I enjoy it. Away from the circuit, when I’m at the factory, of course you have to push hard. It is not what you may think”.

“This weekend has been very good for me, though, very different from Monza and Spa, I’ve always felt comfortable and competitive here, and tomorrow we’ll start in a good position from which to score points”.

The action heads to Singapore next and Button will be aiming for only his third top-10 finish, having clinched eighth in Monaco and ninth in Hungary.
