Jeremy Corbyn admits there were empty seats on ‘ram-packed’ train

Griffith said: “I think it’s really important that Labour Party members understand that we in the shadow cabinet really wanted to make things work and that we wanted to be loyal as well”. Ms De Piero says Mr Corbyn was unable to reach ex-Labour voters who had switched to the Tories in former industrial areas.

Asked by one reporter if he was a “liar” over the train row, and a “lunatic”, Corbyn replied: “I was hoping you were going to ask questions about the National Health Service, but sadly you’re not”.

Mr Corbyn will take his battle for the party leadership to Edinburgh, where he will launch his culture policy against the backdrop of the capital’s festivals.

A spokesman for Senator Sanders told City A.M.: “The senator didn’t send a message and doesn’t intend to get involved in British politics but has a lot of respect for Mr. Corbyn and wishes him well”.

But, on Tuesday, Virgin Trains released CCTV footage from Mr Corbyn’s journey showing the MP walking past empty and unreserved seats before making his film.

In other words, he believes it is obvious that Mr Jones is not a supporter of Mr Corbyn if you read between the lines of what he has said in recent months.

“I didn’t use that language with reference to Jeremy, I used it with reference to myself”, he told ITV News.

He then called for public ownership of the railways.

Labour was rocked by fresh in-fighting as party officials were accused by Jeremy Corbyn’s closest ally of conducting a “rigged purge” of his supporters.

The MP was travelling on the three-hour 11am Virgin Trains service from London King’s Cross to Newcastle on August 11.

Cllr Matthew Patrick, one of the letter’s signatories – and a Labour party member for six years – said: “This letter supporting Owen Smith for leader is bringing together a whole host of people from the Labour Party on Wirral”.

In the past, Smith has been criticised for saying he wants to “smash” Prime Minister Theresa May “back on her heels” and suggested he would be up for having Islamic State (Isis) “around the table” for peace talks over Syria.

A Virgin statement said that his team sat on the ground and began filming.

Mr Draper said he was “disgusted and in shock” after receiving a letter saying he was suspended pending a hearing, a move which will prevent him voting in the leadership election.

At another point in the hustings Mr Smith received raucous laughter from sections of the crowd after he said he believed Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale was doing “a brilliant job”.

Meanwhile, Mr Corbyn set out his NHS policies with commitments including ending private finance initiative (PFI) contracts and guaranteeing bursaries for nurses.
