Jeremy Corbyn to defend Stop the War protest group at fundraising dinner

Peter Tatchell, a leading Corbyn supporter, said Stop the War had “lost its moral compass and authority” because it opposed airstrikes in Syria while ignoring President Assad’s atrocities.

Green MP Caroline Lucas earlier this week quit as a patron of Stop the War, citing concerns about the positions it has adopted.

The group was condemned when it claimed Paris had “reaped the whirlwind of Western support for extremist violence in Middle East” when it was the target of terrorist attacks last month.

In an article after Parliament voted in favour of bombing Syria, the group likened ISIS fanatics to the “spirit of internationalism and solidarity that drove the International Brigades” which fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War.

“Him having a quiet word with some of those guys would be really helpful”.

In an interview with The House magazine, Mr Dugher said many Stop the War activists thought “the wrong people won the Cold War” and the dinner was a chance to deliver a message. “To say I might have a slightly different world view is an understatement”.

Labour has also gone up two points to 29% in the monthly ComRes poll for The Independent on Sunday and Sunday Mirror while the Conservatives have dropped two, although they are still significantly out ahead on 40%. Mr Benn and Mr Corbyn also called for the mandatory reselection of MPs – although the Labour leader insists he has no intention of changing the rules to make it easier to remove the party’s sitting MPs.

“It has brought hundreds of thousands of people on to the streets time and again”. “I think we’ve been right on what we’ve done”. But who are they?

The proposal raises the prospect of Mr Corbyn flooding the conference with supportive delegates, to propose motions overturning settled policy agreements on issues such as the renewal of Britain’s Trident nuclear deterrent. He is also being encouraged to overhaul his Shadow Cabinet in a new year reshuffle and get control of the party’s permanent staff which are still seen as being too loyal to the old guard.

He said: “You can’t bomb your way to peace”.

“It is not just our right, but our obligation to hold our imperial elites to account. So May’s a big test for us all”.

Mr Corbyn has been a longtime supporter of Stop the War and only made a decision to step down as its chairman when he was elected as Labour leader by a landslide of Labour members in September.

The Labour leader this week responded to calls that he should not attend by saying: “I’ll attend all things on my diary”. “But we need to move on from all this sneering and win the next election in 2020”.
