Jeremy Johnson sparks Auburn past Memphis, 31-10, in Birmingham Bowl
The Auburn Tigers defeated the Memphis Tigers 31-10 Wednesday in the 10th Birmingham Bowl at historic Legion Field. Johnson performance was much better in the final stages of conference play when he offered opposing defenses just one interception in the final four games of the Tigers schedule. Things were going so well in the run game, and then all of sudden Gus made a decision to pull out his bag of tricks. However, the drive stalled at the Memphis three-yard-line.

Auburn took over on offense again and led a methodical drive, marching downfield and eating a lot of clock.
Memphis rallied with 10 points of it’s own in the second quarter.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Memphis has removed Reggis Ball from its program after the senior defensive back wrestled a ball from an Auburn equipment staffer at the Birmingham Bowl. He tossed a lame duck into traffic and the pass was intercepted by Reggis Ball, leading to a Memphis field goal. Memphis defensive end Ricky Hunter grew up in Auburn…. Elliott lined up for another field goal at the Auburn 15-yard line, but the kick was blocked by Blake Countess.
Ball finished the match with two interceptions, including a 50-yard interception touchdown run. He threw a pick six in the second quarter and threw another interception on Auburn’s next play.
Auburn, despite the score, didn’t put up a pile of yards, although they did outgain their football feline counterparts 403-206.
“Our guys on offense, especially the guys up front, took the game over”, said Malzahn, whose team outscored Memphis 21-0 in the second half. This time, they could not be stopped with Kerryon Johnson rushing eight yards for the score. The narrative goes like this: An SEC team, having seen its big dreams go bust, arrives at a secondary destination with nothing to play for. Memphis slowly moved into Auburn territory, before finally getting stopped at the 36-yard line.
Memphis lost the game to Auburn, 31-10.
What channel is the Birmingham Bowl featuring Auburn vs. Memphis on?
Worth Noting: Peyton Barber went past the 1,000-yard mark for rushing, stretching Auburn’s streak to seven seasons with at least one player doing that.
In fact, the Birmingham Bowl marked the first time an Auburn defense had not allowed an offensive touchdown since the Western Carolina game in 2013.
Paxton Lynch did not play like the highly projected prospect he is, completing just 17 of his 38 passes for 104 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. “I feel like we were going to have a great season next year”. With Lynch trying to impress pro scouts one last time, look for him to relentlessly attack an Auburn defense that surrendered 421.8 yards per game this season.
Johnson’s touchdown pass broke a 10-10 tie.
“This game is special because it’s personal”, Robinson said. Robinson picked up 121 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Malzahn said he would announce his starter shortly before the game but indicated White’s injured knee is close to 100 percent healthy.
