Jeremy Lin’s savvy openness to Knicks: ‘Never say never’

Charlotte will have many players that will be on the open market during free agency and Lin is not at the top of the list. Either way, the 27-year-old guard turned out a magnificent showing following successive years of struggle.

(Reuters/David Richard-USA TODAY Sports)Charlotte Hornets guard Jeremy Lin (7) is seen in photo attempting a shot while Cleveland Cavaliers forward Channing Frye (9) defends. The problem here however, is that the NY team just acquired Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls.

Because Charlotte doesn’t own Lin’s Larry Bird Rights, those deals are likely to eat up the cap space the team would need to retain Lin. And now that he’s about to become a free agent, this might happen again.

During his interview with Tian Wei, Lin elaborated on his comment about finding one’s identity in more than race or ethnic background, explaining that when he was a student at Harvard the question he was asked most often was: “What is it like to be Asian”.

Lin left NY after his magical run at the end of 2011-12 season, signing a four-year deal with the Rockets.

“Once I saw how my teammates grew up, I thought, ‘if I have a chance I’m going to do something about that”, he said.

Lin’s statements clearly suggest that he might not re-sign with the Hornets next season.

After bouncing around the National Basketball Association for much of his career, free agent Jeremy Lin hopes to find a place to call home this summer. Lin has played for the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers. He also said that he has played for two D-League teams, which means seven cities in six years.

If the rumors connecting Jeremy Lin to the New York Knicks are true, then he might not necessarily be competing with Derrick Rose for playing time. He played great as a sixth man for the Hornets last season and he certainly earned a big raise this summer. Never say never. So I’ve always been open, but right now, I’m not sure it’s the best timing.

Lin will hold meetings in Palo Alto with three clubs, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, and the Hornets are unlikely to return his services.
