Muchinguri said Palmer’s use of a bow and arrow to kill the lion, who is said to have been lured out of Hwange National Park with bait before being shot, contravened Zimbabwean hunting regulations.

While a professional hunter and a farm owner have been arrested in the killing, Palmer has not been charged.

Palmer has said he relied on his guides to ensure the hunt was legal.

As with many African countries, Zimbabwe issues annual hunting permits for big game such as elephant, buffalo and lion, arguing that the revenue generated can be used for wildlife conservation. Extraditions “inevitably come down to political and diplomatic considerations far more than they do legal ones”, Vladeck said.

Hwange is favoured by hunters because of its teeming wildlife, Matipano said. Rodrigues said that another lion had been killed, something that CNN can not immediately verify.

Emmanuel Fundira, chairman of the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe, said his association could lose business as a result of the new hunting ban, but added that the measures were necessary to protect wildlife.

American Pharoah turned on the speed in the stretch and easily won the $1.75 million Haskell Invitational on Sunday in his first race since sweeping the Triple Crown.

On Saturday, a lion researcher cast doubt on a report of the shooting death of a male lion who was a companion of Cecil.

“We apologize for reporting that he had died but were confident that our sources were in fact correct”, the conservation task force said in a Facebook post Sunday.
