LA Times reports there was a bidding war for his 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder and it ended up selling for over $5 million alone.

Jerry Seinfeld has just become even more rich than he already was after he auctioned off 17 cars and received over $22 million for them.

A 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, with coachwork by Scaglietti, fetched $17.2 million at the annual Amelia Island auctions on March 11.

The comedian’s cars – 15 Porsches and two Volkswagens – brought in US$22,244,500 (NZ$33.3 million) including US$5,335,000 (NZ$8m) for just one of them, a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder that was only slightly younger than 67-year-old Seinfeld. He sold a 1959 Porsche 718 RSK for $2.9 million and a 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 for $2.3 million.

Many chided him for letting the classic auto get wet, with one particularly irate enthusiast fuming: ‘Do NOT drive a collectible 356 in the rain!

Although he didn’t get as much as he wanted as a whole – in fact, a ’73 Porsche 917 was expected to go for about $6 million but only went for $3 million – his pockets are certainly lined pretty well.

Jerry Seinfeld’s 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 IROC RSR that sold at auction for NZ$3.46 million.

Seinfeld intimated time and space issues prompted the auction, saying in a statement “It’s time to send some of them back into the world” for others to enjoy the way he has.

Only one vehicle from Seinfeld’s lot, a 2000 Porsche Carrera GT Prototype, went unsold because it didn’t attract a high enough bid.

Seinfeld likewise had a 1960 VW Beetle on the block, it chose $121,000, more than two times its approximated cost forecast.
