Jersey flub: Trump mixes up Sen. Tim Kaine, Gov. Tom Kean

Kaine says his father-in-law remains a Republican, but is voting for Democrats because “any party that would nominate Donald Trump for president has moved too far away from his party of Lincoln”.

Kaine tore into Donald Trump as a “guy who promises a lot” but always follows up with the words “believe me”. “His creditors, his contractors, his laid-off employees, his ripped-off students did just that, and they all got hurt”.

“You know who I don’t trust?”

As United States Senator from Virginia, Kaine co-sponsored a bill created to require employers to provide health coverage for contraception and abortifacients that are against their religious beliefs.

Perhaps Kaine’s most memorable speech came after the Virginia Tech shooting. Elizabeth Warren of MA or Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and HUD Secretary Julian Castro. Tim Kaine as her running mate, bringing a swing-state centrist to the first woman-led presidential ticket for a major party.

Kaine is expected to accept the nomination during a Wednesday night speech. He introduced himself to the American public, switching between English and Spanish and talking about his time as a Catholic missionary in Honduras.

“I’m delighted with the pick she made”, said David Rosen, who was attending the DNC from Midland, Texas. Kaine was governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010.

“These are the battles I’ve been fighting my whole life”.

Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was among Trump’s finalists for vice president. The assumption is that, because Clinton wants to avoid responding to personal attacks from Trump, that responsibility will fall to her number two.

During Kaine’s corny but sincere delivery, with all those folksy “Can I be honest with you?” segues and that so-bad-it’s-good Trump impression, many on Twitter noted Kaine’s similarities to a well-meaning father, uncle, or high-school teacher. Do you really believe him?

“That’s what this race is about”, Kaine said.

Donna Brazile, who took over as interim Democratic Party chairwoman after Debbie Wasserman Schultz stepped down over allegations that her staff favored Clinton over Bernie Sanders, told USA TODAY she was not concerned by current polling numbers. “Bernie!” and Sanders himself applauded quietly.

“He’s ready to step up” on day one if anything were to happen to Clinton, Victoria Cochran, a Virginia delegate told Rare.

But it will be convincing the liberal base of the Democratic Party that Kaine is just such a progressive that will be the tough sell.

Kaine also praised the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which is bitterly opposed by Sanders and his supporters, in an interview last week.

KING 5 asked a group of local Democrats and undecided voters what they thought of the convention so fart and what they were looking for in Kaine’s and Obama’s speeches.

Before closing his remarks, Kaine returned to making the case for Clinton, something he’ll spend the next three months doing as he crisscrosses the country.

Kaine continued: “Remember Karla, the little girl we heard from on Monday who was anxious that her parents would be deported?”
