JetBlue set to offer US-Cuba flights

One-way flights will be $99, with round-trip from $210, including Cuba-required health insurance coverage and taxes, making it the lowest Cuba fare announced so far by a commercial airline.

Starting August 31, the airline’s flights to Santa Clara’s Abel Santamaría Airport will operate three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The company will begin flights from its Fort Lauderdale hub to the three Cuban cities of Santa Clara, Camagüey and Holguin.

Looking ahead, JetBlue also revealed Thursday that it was tentatively awarded flights between Havana and three USA cities and plans to announce a start date and fares for flights to Havana later this year.

Here’s how to understand existing travel restrictions for USA citizens traveling to Cuba. Daily flights will begin October 1.

The airline will upgrade this service to daily flights from Oct.1, also offering daily flights from Fort Lauderdale to Camaguey from Nov.3 and to Holguin from November 10. One week later on November 10, JetBlue will begin operating daily flights between Fort Lauderdale and Frank Pais Airport in Holguin, Cuba. Availability at such a cheap fare is limited, but we did a search of the route this morning and indeed were able to find a flight departing on August 31 and returning one week later for a grand total of $204. JetBlue’s fares to Cuba offer the same amenities. JetBlue said it will also sell visas upon check-in for about $50.

Adding to the convenience, the airline has made it so customers can complete the U.S. Department of Treasury-required affidavit during the booking process.

The airline announced the new flights are “aimed at removing the high costs and complexity of travel to Cuba”. Separate from the US regulated 12 categories, visitors must also obtain an entrance visa into Cuba.

Pending Cuban government approval, JetBlue would – so far – be the first USA commercial airline to fly to Cuba in more than half a century. The company will announce a start date and fares for Havana later this year.
