Jets’ Bowles not opposed to idea of starting Geno Smith
Can journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick find the path to victory again – or is it time for Geno Smith to start warming up in the bullpen.

Waiting until the end of the season for surgery could have led to a more complicated procedure. Today, following the Jets 24-17 loss to the Houston Texans, head coach Todd Bowles had a few choice words for his quarterback situation in NY.
“But it’s not a big thing”, he added, “other than we’re out there trying to win another game and trying to get back on track, so the personal stuff has to be set aside and I’ve got to go try to win a football game”.
I don’t think we’re underachieving. At the time, Fitzpatrick seemed like the answer for the Jets’ offensive woes.
“He had turnovers and we can’t have turnovers”, Bowles said of Fitzpatrick.
“To be honest with you, he looked like last week”, Gailey said. But he was confident he would be starting at Houston, the team that traded him during the offseason.
Fitzpatrick acknowledged Wednesday that the thumb was causing him a little bit more pain than before the surgery because of the incision from the procedure.
Through all that, the Jets didn’t face a deficit of larger than seven points until the fourth quarter; after all that, the Jets still had two chances to drive down the field and tie the game in the fourth quarter, but two interceptions by quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick left the Jets empty-handed. It was bad, real bad, but Fitzpatrick put enough in the bank over the first eight games to warrant one last chance.
“They had their plan of what they wanted to do and I didn’t happen to be in those plans”, Fitzpatrick said Wednesday. “Everybody’s got to move on in this league”.

NOTES: DL Sheldon Richardson sat out again with an ailing hamstring and Bowles maintains he’ll probably be a game-time decision. Bowles said “not at this time” and said he was still committed to Fitzpatrick before failing to totally slam the door on the possibility. Last week, the Bills returned Smith’s fumbled kickoff for a touchdown. “He’s been sick for a couple of days”, Bowles said. “He’s got a high temperature and everything else.”… One of his best weapons-wide receiver Brandon Marshall-was clearly frustrated after being held to five catches for 47 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. But the welcome was a rude one courtesy of a Texans’ defense that limited the Jets to just 57 total yards in the first half and 267 for the game.
