Jets’ Devin Smith has partially punctured lung, broken ribs
Smith was injured at practice Friday while making an impressive catch, and the team announced he would miss the majority of the remainder of training camp. Last season was a magnificent year for Smith, as he totaled 33 receptions, 931 receiving yards, and 12 receiving touchdowns. Smith, a second-round pick from Ohio State, remained hospitalized for a second night.

Per the team, Smith was being held overnight in a hospital as a precaution. But how behind will he be after missing almost all of training camp? He is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks, which means he could miss the regular-season opener against Cleveland on September 13. New Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles confirmed this report at a press conference. The injury happened when Smith, who made a catch on a deflected pass, got drilled in the back by safety Jaiquawn Jarrett.

Bowles is hoping the offense will be better and drafting Smith could help, as he will be slotted at the number three spot with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker at wide receiver. Pro Football Talk reports that Smith could be out for the rest of camp and his availability for the first game of the season “remains unknown”. While we will have to wait and see how Smith comes back, it is probable that once he returns to the field he will be a big contributor with the Jets in 2015, and a good target for Smith to throw to.
