General manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles have greatly improved numerous things the Jets struggled to get right under John Idzik and Rex Ryan.

Barring an injury to Ryan Fitzpatrick, I don’t think we’re going to see Geno Smith starting this season. We’ll see how long the ride lasts, but for now the team is smart to enjoy it while they can.
Six weeks after a teammate broke his jaw with a locker-room punch, Jets quarterback Geno Smith has been cleared to play football. For all his flaws, Smith is more advanced than Petty, whom the Jets initially slotted as their third-string quarterback. The Jets rumors address that even when Geno Smith returns from his injury, the team will stick with Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick completed 22 of 34 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns in that game, and perhaps could have thrown more except for the fact the Jets still seemed focused on establishing the run against an Indianapolis defense that was loading the box.
Fitzpatrick never has been and won’t ever be spectacular, but he’s steady, and with a defense as strong as the Jets’ could be, that’s all they need.
COACHING: A-minus – Todd Bowles didn’t say much of anything but got the Jets fully prepared for an early-season statement game in prime time.
Bowles said later on 98.7 ESPN New York radio that Owusu could miss a couple of weeks. In his 11th season, Fitzpatrick isn’t setting the league on fire and helping people to dominate their fantasy leagues.
“He’s the best in the game at the corner position and he shows it every week”, linebacker Calvin Pace said. “We’re going to have to get better to continue to win games on offense”.
Fitzpatrick, one of the keys to the Jets’ 2-0 start, took Bowles’ vote of confidence in stride.
Fitzpatrick has played well in his two starts en route to a 94.3 quarterback rating.
INJURY WATCH: Decker is expected to have an MRI on his injured knee Tuesday. Next up is a home game against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 27, followed by a road game against the Miami Dolphins on October 4. Smith lead the FBS with almost 30 yards per catch past year at Ohio State and displayed serious ball skills downfield. Kelly said he talked with Bowles after taking over as the Eagles’ coach but didn’t try to convince him to stay as he was already was set on going to Arizona to be the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator. The one-sided road win over the Colts was an extremely impressive showing for the Jets’ defense, but Fitzpatrick did steer the team to another big win.
