Jets QB punched by teammate, out 6-10 weeks

Well, things got New York Jets-like pretty quickly today, with head coach Todd Bowles announcing an injury to quarterback Geno Smith.

Bowles called the attack a “sucker punch” and said it had “nothing to do with football”, but did not go into further detail. “It’s something very childish that sixth graders could have talked about and it had no reason happening”.

Former Bills, Titans and Texans veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookies Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps are the other quarterbacks now on the Jets’ roster. “You don’t walk up to a man and punch him in the face”.

The whole situation is a bit of a mess, as the Jets were planning on starting Smith as the QB to open the season. The team knows this is something we don’t tolerate and is not something we stand for. He also threw 13 interceptions for the season. Unfortunately for Smith, that collection of talent was another factor in any bullish predictions about his 2015 season.

It’s an undeniable setback for the Jets from a long-term organizational standpoint, at least based on the hope that Smith would take a step forward and prove to be the answer they hoped for.

According to NFL Network, Enemkpali leveled Smith when the quarterback put his finger in the 270-pounder’s face during a heated exchange, prompting the punch. He said Smith won’t be playing this weekend or during the preseason.

Last year, he had a few flashes of solid play, but again had issues with turnovers and consistency and was benched a few times in favor of Michael Vick.

Enemkpali was a sixth-round pick in 2014 and was a reserve linebacker. New York signed cornerback Javier Arena after releasing the linebacker.
