Jets rally past Giants in OT

Game Preview: In a season filled with almosts and not-quites, the New York Giants offense has one seemingly constant problem; its run game. On third-and-one from the Jets’ 49-yard-line, Manning floated a ball to Beckham up the right side of the field, but it slipped through his hands.

Ryan Fitzpatrick and the New York Jets pulled out a stunning 23-20 overtime win in the stadium they share with the Giants on Sunday in what was technically an “away” game. That’s essentially one of the main stories of the season for the Giants offense. After making a franchise record 29 straight field-goal conversions, Brown’s first miss since 2014 was a doozy when his 48-yard attempt in overtime sailed wide left.

Late in the quarter the Jets managed to tie the game at 10-10 on a drive in which they had to withstand a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty because Willie Colon, on the IR and on the bench, was jawing at one of the Giants players.

Fitzpatrick has played 108 career games, a lot of them in Buffalo (when things were dire) and Cincinnati (when things were dire) and some in Tennessee and Houston (maybe not dire, but hardly delightful). “I stand by it”. And the Giants played hot potato again with the run game, leaning heavily on Andre Williams early, then mixing in Orleans Darkwa, and throwing Rashad Jennings and Shane Vereen in on some passing plays.

“It was a good win”, said Jets head coach Todd Bowles. The Jets won, 23-20, on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

Marshall said Jenkins came up to him later in the game and the two talked it through. “I’m just pissed off”, Pierre-Paul said.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick led the Jets on a 10-play, 71-yard drive, throwing the game-tying score to Brandon Marshall on a fade route against Prince Amukamara.

The Stars: Fitzpatrick had to throw 50 passes but was able to keep his team in the game with 390 yards and two touchdowns. A touchdown would have put the Jets down 14-3, and changed the complexion of the game.

After both teams were forced to punt of their opening possessions, the Jets got the first points of the day on the board with Bilal Powell was tackled short looking for a rushing touchdown, leaving Randy Bullock to kick the field goal.

“There was a lot of stuff that needed to happen there in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter”, Fitzpatrick said. “There was always just a great belief in the huddle, a great belief on the sideline that we could come back and take this thing”.

Odell Beckham Jr. sprinted 72 yards for a touchdown and Dwayne Harris weaved 80 yards for another on a punt return for the Giants. It’s something we can’t dwell on.

Eli Manning, the quarterback on the opposite sideline, has two Super Bowl MVP trophies at home.

Trailing 20-13 with 2:13 remaining, the Jets (7-5) rallied as the Giants (5-7) watched their playoff hopes in the NFC East take a significant hit. It gave the Giants a 17-10 lead with 2:13 remaining in the first half. It got to the point where [Josh Brown] was about to kick the field goal and I told him they’re going to miss it. I said, ‘Hey, I’ve been in the league 10 years, haven’t made the playoffs, you 11. A 43-yard kickoff return by Harris and a 20-yard pass to Beckham on fourth down from the Giants 46 set up Brown’s missed attempt.
