Jets rally to defeat Giants in overtime

It wasn’t pretty – in fact, it was ugly – but the Jets came away with a hard fought 23-20 victory in overtime.

The Jets had Mo Wilkerson benched for the first quarter because he was late to a meeting, showing Bowles’ penchant for discipline, but the team got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct as well. The Bills can’t afford to lose this one or they’ll probably fall out of the AFC wildcard race, and they will end the Texans’ run. He fielded a 55-yard punt by Ryan Quigley, avoided the initial wave of defenders and then weaved 80 yards up the left sideline in front of the Jets’ bench for his second touchdown return of the season.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (5-6): Manning isn’t shy about leaning on Odell Beckham Jr., who was targeted a staggering 18 times in New York’s 20-14 setback to the Redskins last week.

The Jets gave up yet another big play on the next Giants drive, which resulted in a 35-yard Brown field goal.

With the fate of a season and questions about Coughlin’s coaching future undoubtedly on the horizon, the Giants managed to gift-wrap a game to the other team in town.

On the impact of Bilal Powell to counteract the pressure: “They did a really nice job in the first half with their scheme and getting to me with different pressures, it was tough to get a read on where they were coming from, so they did a nice job”. In between safety Calvin Pryor saved another touchdown when he broke up a pass to Beckham in the endzone, knocking Beckham to the ground.

The Giants were shut out in the second half after using big plays to a 20-10 lead.

The Giants had an opportunity to go up big in the second quarter after the Giants defense, who had a good start to the game, recovered a Chris Ivory fumble at the Jets 21-yard-line. They lost to Washington before playing Gang Green in 2011 as well, so it will be interesting to see if history repeats itself. It put Tom Coughlin under the watch of the owners, who seem to be frustrated with the inconsistency shown this season by the Giants, including the effort and focus from the players, not something new under Coughlin. With 4:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, it was 20-13 Giants. However, in the situation, it made no sense for the Giants to go for a touchdown. “It’s a weird drive, all the penalties and things of that nature going on”. After the Giants offense went three and out on their ensuing possession, Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick drove his offense on a 10 play, 71 yard drive that culminated with a game-tying touchdown pass to wide receiver Brandon Marshall with 27 seconds left in regulation.

The Jets won the toss to begin overtime. The team also could have kicked a field goal before the Manning interception, but elected to go for it-which obviously didn’t work out too well. Yes, the Giants’ inability to score touchdowns while in the red zone contributed to the loss, but the Jets were not exactly the model of efficiency in that regard either. When we watch the Jets Giants game live streaming or on TV today, it’s nearly a must-win scenario for the Jets. “It got to the point where he was about to kick the field goal and I told him they’re going to miss it. I said hey I’ve been in the league 10 years haven’t made the playoffs, you 11, we’ve bounced around from team to team, the football gods are hearing us right now so he’s going to miss this kick”.

The Jets (7-5) didn’t seal the win until Josh Brown missed a 48-yard field goal field goal with 6:33 left in the extra session, his first miss in 26 attempts this season.

Tye had 70 yards on the afternoon, including a huge 45-yard gain right up the middle of the field which led to a field goal before the half. Brandon Marshall led the Jets with 12 receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown.

The duo has combined for 17 TDs – nine for Marshall and eight for Decker – the most by a pair of Jets receivers since Keyshawn Johnson (10) and Wayne Chrebet (eight) in 1998.
