FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Rookie wide receiver Devin Smith drew cheers when he managed to haul in a deflected pass while in the air for an impressive catch on Friday.

The Jets announced Friday night Smith was taken to a local hospital after he suffered broken ribs during practice.
July can’t come to a close any quicker for the New York Jets. Smith was a second-round draft pick out of Ohio State in this year’s draft and brings plenty of talent to the Jets’ receiving core.

Smith took a hit from safety Jaiquawn Jarrett causing the injury. Head coach Todd Bowles said immediately after practice he wasn’t sure of the exact nature of Smith’s injury. With 4.4 speed, Smith is a guy that the Jets are counting to open up the vertical passing game, creating room for receivers such as Eric Decker, Brandon Marshall, and Jace Amaro. “I saw him walking gingerly coming off”. Smith and Jeremy Kerley are in contention for the No. 3 receiver spot.
