Jets’ Sheldon Richardson returns after 1-game suspension

Darrelle Revis stood at his locker for the second time in three days, rehashing one of the worst days of his National Football League career.

Less than 24 hours after the New York Jets’ 23-22 season-opening loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the coach had already put that in the past. The whispers about whether Revis’ shutdown skills have suddenly diminished have also grown louder.

“I’m pleased he got two of them in one game and he handled both of them very, very well”, coach Marvin Lewis said.

“Now, we’ve just got to go out there and prove it”. Green, who finished with 12 catches for 180 yards and a touchdown. The most eye-popping of all was the 54-yarder Green caught from Andy Dalton, with Revis trailing him into the end zone.

“We have a bad taste in our mouth from previous year”, cornerback Darrelle Revis said. “The busted coverage, I’m supposed to get help, but at the same time, it is what it is”.

“You have to understand (something) about me”, Bowles said. In the first Jets-Bills game a year ago, these were Watkins’ numbers when Revis covered him: three catches on seven targets for 14 yards, with two drops.

Revis said it’s not weird to be fielding so many questions about what went wrong and what needs to be fixed.

“Like I told the players, win, lose or draw – and we talked about this last week – we were going to move on”, he said. “You bounce back. That’s all you can do”.

“The one that I pushed to the right actually felt better than the next one I made”, said Nugent.

Revis could face Sammy Watkins, who is dealing with discomfort in his surgically repaired left foot but said he’ll be fine to play.

“We lost six games (in 2015), so we can pick any one of those games and say we have (to get) redemption”, Bowles said.

The Jets are in danger of falling to 0-2 to start the season, a position the team wants to try to avoid at all costs.

But for most of his 10 seasons, Revis has been nearly automatic when it comes to keeping other teams’ top receivers off the stats sheet and out of the end zone.

“It’s a division rival, so obviously it’s going to be a tough game”, Bowles said of facing Buffalo. That’s where he’d be coming down from. “And I’m sure that will carry into this game”. The Jets have lost four consecutive road games with the Bills (including one played in Detroit, in 2014, because of snow). He struggled in a couple of games last season, inviting criticism, but it was later revealed that he played with a torn tendon in his wrist that required offseason surgery. “But there’s a reason why Quincy had seven catches: Because Eric is getting a lot of coverage, I’m getting a lot of coverage, Matt is creating eight-man boxes”. “It’s a long season”. “We have to get back to work (Monday)”.

Revis, who is making $17 million this season, set the bar so high that it becomes news whenever the 31-year-old gets beat for a big play.

New York Jets coach Todd Bowles, master of timeworn cliches, insisted Tuesday that the Thursday game against the Buffalo Bills – the team that ended the Jets’ playoff hopes a year ago with a 22-17 win in the regular-season finale – has no more meaning than any other. LB Jordan Jenkins (calf) and QB Bryce Petty (right shoulder) did not practice, and neither are expected to be available Thursday.
