Jets sign free agent centre Mark Scheifele to eight-year contract

The Winnipeg Jets have locked up centre Mark Scheifeles services for the next eight years.

Now, it seems they’ve managed to do that – and lock him up for the next eight seasons.

While Perreault has had durability issues (last season was his first ever season with more than 70 games played), he has proven to be a consistent contributor when healthy.

Scheifele, 23, set a career-high with 61 points in 2015-16 and was a restricted free agent.

He has a total of 145 points in 227 games. The question, though, will be whether or not this deal will have any effect on what the team ends up paying out on their new extension for fellow pending RFA Jacob Trouba. He also tallied a career-best 29 goals to go along with 32 assists in 71 games.

The contract makes him the highest paid forward on the team, surpassing Blake Wheeler’s $5.6 million cap hit, and the second highest paid player on the team overall.
