The airlines said meteorologists and the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre had deemed it unsafe to fly around Denpasar Airport due to the eruption of nearby Mount Rinjani.

In a statement on their website Virgin said that “conditions in the vicinity of Denpasar Airport are not safe for flying”.

Jetstar also released a list of the flights that have been cancelled. Flights affecting travellers to and from Singapore include JQ117 (Singapore to Bali) and JQ116 (Bali to Singapore).

Virgin was among other Australian airlines that cancelled their flights in July and August when Mount Raung in East Java erupted.

Ash spewing from a volcano forced Indonesian authorities to close the global airport on Bali on Tuesday, an official said, temporarily grounding all flights to the popular holiday island.

“We will continue to closely monitor the movement of the ash cloud and update customers if continued poor flying conditions lead to further cancellations”.

Virgin said in a statement that a decision on Wednesday’s flights would be made following further updates from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre.

Affected airlines included Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Cathay Pacific and KLM, according to Ardita. Several airlines including flights from SIA, Tiger Air, Jetstar and AirAsia were affected then.
