In a statement, Carrey said the filing of the lawsuit was a “terrible shame”.

Cathriona White, who first met in 2012 and was in an on-off relationship with Carrey, committed suicide via drug overdose on September 28, 2015. White and Carrey dated in 2012 and were photographed together in May 2015.

Jim Carrey has been handed a wrongful death suit in connection to the fatal overdose of his girlfriend that occurred in late 2015.

Veteran comic actor Jim Carrey was sued for allegedly procuring drugs under a bogus name for his ex-girlfriend, who died of an overdose previous year, and then trying to hide his involvement.

Jim Carrey, pictured here at Cathriona White’s funeral, has denied allegations that he covered up his involvement in his girlfriend’s death. A coroner’s official told reporters that the pair were separated and planned to divorce, however Burton’s attorney Michael Avenatti declined to characterize their relationship beyond saying they were legally married at the time of White’s death.

According to a suicide note White had written to Carrey, and contained in the autopsy report, White was broken-hearted over their recent breakup.

Carrey’s attorney, prominent celebrity lawyer Marty Singer, dismissed the suit on Monday as nothing but a bid by Burton to extort money from the actor.

The suit was filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court by Mark Burton, who is identified as the husband of Cathriona White.

In his statement, Carrey responded that White’s health issues “were born long before I met her”, adding that her death was tragic but ultimately “beyond anyone’s control”.

According to USA Today, Burton’s lawsuit claims the drugs that contributed to the makeup artist’s overdose came from three pill bottles bearing the name Arthur King, which the lawsuit alleges a doctor illicitly prescribed to Carrey using the actor’s pseudonym.

Carrey, who had split from White a week before her death, concluded, “I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace”. I’m sorry you felt I wasn’t there for you.

The actor attended White’s funeral, and a photo published by People shows him helping to carry her casket.
