Jim Harbaugh smashed a buckeye with a hammer at Bo Schembechler’s grave

Knowledge of history and a tie to the past always has mattered to some MI football fans, and coach Jim Harbaugh has both. In MI, not beating Ohio State on a consistent basis usually doesn’t go over well.

He likened the games to the pick-up basketball games he played at Pattengill Elementary in Ann Arbor. “The goal was to play all the way to lunch”. Also there is the grave of the man who has coached MI football to the most wins, Bo Schembechler. “He really had the vision”.

The walk travels past the graves of legendary MI coaches Fielding Yost and Bo Schembechler, as well as former MI radio broadcaster Bob Ufer.

The group then paid their respects at the graves of Ufer and Yost and sang UM’s alma mater and fight song.

While at the grave site of Schembechler, Harbaugh took a buckeye nut, placed it on the grave and smashed it. Had the patience, some people called it the stubbornness, to stick to the plan and to have a plan and carry it out with an intensity and an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

“It was great, the best part was being with all those others that were there and sharing that together last night”, he said.

Accompanied by his father Jack Harbaugh (who coached on Schembechler’s staff) and 15-year-old daughter, Jim Harbaugh talked about Schembechler’s impact.
