Jim McElwain’s 94-Year-Old Mom Gave Him an Earful for Chewing Out Player
“We all know the thing that he did, it’s a penalty”. I’m not proud of it, and neither is my mother. “I feel badly for the coach and I feel badly for the player and I hope we can all move past that”.

Florida coach Jim McElwain’s profane sideline outburst directed at tailback Kelvin Taylor during the Gators’ 31-24 victory over East Carolina on Saturday did not sit well with McElwain’s 94-year-old mother, Marjorie.
A video clip of the confrontation surfaced and captured McElwain yelling the following: “Look at me!” But it is hard to ignore the way McElwain looked in that moment – like a man struggling to handle the tinderbox that is coaching the Gators.
“I don’t think he should test his manhood”, Taylor said.
During the press conference, the first-year coach was asked whether he would consider using the bench as a way to get his point across in the future, and McElwain said he would be willing to do so. The 5-foot-11, 216-pound RB had racked up 164 yards and three touchdowns through two games.
Either Jordan Cronkrite or fellow freshman Jordan Scarlett is expected to start against the Wildcats.
Kelvin Taylor’s TD was the calm before the storm. I thought his error in judgement was as egregious as Taylor’s.
“I’d say right now he’s questionable, but we’ll update all this stuff on Wednesday when we have some practices under our belt”, McElwain said.
“Rightfully so”, McElwain said.
Despite the fact that McElwain put Robinson on the third team the previous week, the junior still played a starter’s level of minutes while leading the team with five receptions against East Carolina.

Senior offensive guard Trip Thurman said he had no problem with McElwain’s sideline explosion. “On any team, the head coach is a father figure”. Though this touchdown-saving tackle on Alex McCalister made absolutely zero sense, this will go down as his best game in a Gators uniform. “Coach loves us all”. He’s the son of former Florida and Jacksonville Jaguars star running back Fred Taylor, who was fined $10,000 by the National Football League for making the same throat-slash gesture in 2002. “And sometimes they tend to go a little bit overboard by trying to do what the university hired them for”, Fred Taylor told ESPN.
