An NBC crew was at the Plains church this morning and it caught the moment when Carter updated the crowd on his health – and the gasps and cheers that followed. I have watched my own family members undergo cancer treatment, and each time it is a heartbreaking experience. At the recent American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting, Leonard Saltz, MD, from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NY, said the total cost to treat all metastatic cancer patients in the United States would be an unsustainable $174 billion per year.
“In the past, we didn’t have the tools”.

Soon came a wave of other immunotherapies for melanoma, including the drug Carter is receiving, which was approved in September 2014. Lawson was involved in studies that resulted in approval of the drug Yervoy in 2011.
Carter was scheduled to receive four treatments at three week intervals starting in late August. In a statement last month, the human rights organisation he founded, the Carter Center, said he was responding well to treatment and there was no evidence of new malignancy.
