Carter told the congregation at his Plains, Ga. church that Jeremy Carter had laid down to take a nap yesterday because he “wasn’t feeling well”.

“His heart stopped shortly afterwards”.

His grandson, 28-year-old Jeremy Carter, had died just hours earlier.

Carter, a former peanut farmer, served as US president from 1977 to 1981, losing his reelection bid to Ronald Reagan. However, he was visibly “shaken” and “obviously sad”, claims the reverend. “But it was apparent to everyone there that this was weighing on him very heavily”, Maranatha Baptist Church Rev. Jeremy Shoulta told CNN.

During his sermon, Shoulta urged congregants to pray for the Carter family. “His presence at the church today gave him an opportunity to fulfill his obligations to the church and also to feel the loving presence of his faith community”.

“I should be joyful and thankful to God for giving me both life and freedom”, Carter continued, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. However after treatment and radiation, he said he is now cancer-free.
