Jimmy Garoppolo passes first test as Patriots edge Cardinals

But Garoppolo, charged with replacing Brady during the future Hall of Famer’s four-game suspension for his alleged role in the Deflategate controversy, brought his team back and proved the Las Vegas odds makers, who had listed New England as 9-point underdogs, to be dead wrong.

It’s poetic that I could be talking about both Sunday Night’s game, as well as the 2012 Cardinals upset of the Patriots.

The Cardinals turned that into their second touchdown of the night when David Johnson for a 1-yard score to cut the New England lead to 17-14.

As a second-round pick (62nd overall) in the 2014 National Football League draft, Garoppolo hadn’t had too many chances to play as Tom Brady’s backup.

The Cardinals had a chance to win it but Chandler Catanzaro missed a 47-yard field goal with 41 seconds remaining. “As poorly as we played, we should have still won”. But Catanzaro was making no excuses. “Coach was there on the treadmill watching film, and we just so happen to walk out at the same time”.

And unlike Wentz, who was playing against perhaps the worst team in football in the Cleveland Browns, Garoppolo was up against a true heavyweight in the Cardinals, who many consider the most talented team in football from one through 53. “Drew got it down and he (Catanzaro) pulled it”. The Patriots would hold on to the ball for the next six minutes, and while the 13-play drive didn’t end in a touchdown, kicker Stephen Gostkowski was able to hit a 32-yard field goal to give the lead back to New England, 23-21. “Third-and-15, you got to let your guys get down the field and Danny found the opening in the zone”. Bill Belichick and staff had their team ready to play.

“He made some good plays”.

“I know in my heart I should have made that kick”, he said.

“I didn’t really think about it too much, I guess”, he said.

No Tom Brady, no Rob Gronkowski, top defensive player Rob Ninkovich and neither starting offensive tackle played.

“Just having confidence in your teammates”, Garoppolo said. “He’s just the most disciplined, hard-working guy and that’s why we have a team that goes out and tries to do the same”.

That starts with better play from Tannehill, who has thrown seven interceptions in those four games and never posted a passer rating above 73.5 in a road game in New England. He’ll get there. The Cardinals created a little bit of a pass rush.

New England, a five-point underdog, took the lead on its first possession and scored again to start the second half. “They were 10-for-16 on third down”.

Worst start on a first start: Arizona rookie cornerback Brandon Williams was burned badly by Hogan on the touchdown and struggled mightily for most of the night.

Best bounce: Calais Campbell deflected Garoppolo’s first pass of the second half, but the quarterback alertly caught it himself and ran upfield.

He makes a cut, spins out of traffic, puts his hand on the ground to stay on his feet, stiff-arms two players and outruns another. That set up a pretty over-the-shoulder catch by Fitzgerald, the 100th TD reception of his career. “I wish I could take it back but I can’t”.
