JJ Abrams Won’t Recast Anton Yelchin’s Chekov in Future STAR TREK Films
Star Trek Beyond was released on more than 3800 theatres worldwide and having a great collection on the box office on the very first day of its release. And I’ve talked to him (Shatner) about it.

Just as the crew of the Starship Enterprise was about to head out into the final frontier on their five-year mission, the captain chose to leave his post and move to another galaxy. He’s paid tribute to in the film, something that couldn’t be done for Anton Yelchin, who died in a freak accident in June. Most of the crew is captured, save for a smattering who end up stranded and scattered on the surface of the closest planet.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana stunned on the red carpet with more of the cast of the sci-fi reboot – many of them wearing black Starfleet lapel pins to honor Anton Yelchin. But before they can have a melding of the minds, the starship comes under attack by the mysterious but merciless Krall (Idris Elba).
Star Trek Beyond is out on Friday. Justin Lin directs, while Pegg co-wrote the screenplay with Doug Jung (though uncredited work was apparently done by Roberto Orci, Patrick McKay, and John D. Payne).
Stepping in for J.J. Abrams – who’s been a little busy with the Star Wars franchise – is Justin Lin, who’s clearly learned something about orchestrating complex action sequences while juggling large casts of characters on four Fast & Furious movies.
Simon Pegg is also expected to return to the film as Scotty, although he will not be writing the script for the new installment. The action could’ve felt more cohesive if the camera wasn’t moving around so much.
According to CBS, the new Star Trek series “will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966”.
If the last film in this series proved anything, it’s that there’s only place for one tall, white, unemotional character in a Star Trek film-and that person has pointy ears. He boldly went where only a few has ever gone before and tried to “give her all she’s got”.

While it will be sad to see a “Trek” without one of our favorite shipmates aboard, we can’t help but be excited to see Kirk and company explore more odd new worlds on the big screen.
