JJ Abrams won’t recast Anton Yelchin’s Star Trek role

Yelchin tragically died Sunday, June 19, at around 1 a.m., when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence.

“I would say theres no replacing him”.

In an interview with the Toronto Sun, producer J.J. “There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better”.

While at the same event Chris Pine, who plays Captain James T. Kirk in the film, revealed, “I don’t really know any other way that I would have been able to deal with it (Anton’s death) without having my friends and my family around me”. Directed by Justin Lin, the third film in the franchise series is produced by J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci, Lindsey Weber, and Justin Lin; and executive produced by Jeffrey Chernov, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Tommy Harper.

Abrams went on to say that he’s working on ideas on how to retire Chekov and has thought about killing off the character, but “it’s too early to talk about it”.

The stars of “Star Trek Beyond” honored their late cast mate Anton Yelchin with a minute’s silence at the film’s US premiere.

With Yelchin’s death having happened so recently, it’s understandable that Abrams and the creative team haven’t worked out exactly how to handle it yet.
