“In the Native American community, some witches and wizards were accepted and even lauded within their tribes, gaining reputations for healing as medicine men, or outstanding hunters”.

The new series is a part a larger exploration by Rowling of the Harry Potter universe in the states. The latter is set 70 years prior to the events of Harry Potter and tells the story of a wizard who brings a case of magical beasts to New York-and releases them.

Meanwhile, Rowling – who admitted that wizards in her world “deny the right to bear wands to other categories of magical being – also clarified as a fan asked whether a wizard with a wand would beat a wandless one”.

A trailer released to accompany the news warned: “These aren’t myths, for the history of America is more unbelievable than you could ever imagine”.

Writes Rowling: ‘while every nationality has its own term for “Muggle”, the American community uses the slang term No-Maj, short for “No Magic”‘. Mostly what J.K. Rowling will spend writing on the new book will be “Skinwalkers”, which is called “Animagi” in the “Harry Potter” books. Read about the part the wizards of America played in the Great War of 1914-1918, and why if you’re a wizard in 1920s America you need a wand permit. Announced Monday on Rowling’s Web site, www.pottermore.com, “Magic in North America” will run in installments Tuesday-Friday on Pottermore. Titled The History of Magic in North America, the online tales will detail the evolution of the previously unexplored North American wizarding world.

Pottermore, the digital publishing, e-commerce, entertainment and news company from J.K. Rowling, is the global digital publisher of Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World.

As of writing, J.K. Rowling has not commented on the accusations of cultural appropriation against her. “The magic wand originated in Europe”.

Eddie Redmayne will star as Newt in series – due to hit cinemas 18 November 2016 – and will see him accidentally unleashing a box full of magical beasts upon 1920’s NY.
