The 9 February event, held within the premises of Jawaharlal Nehru University, escalated into a massive controversy following allegations that “anti-national” slogans were raised at the event.

The high court order came during the hearing on Kumar’s bail plea after it was informed that the student leader and Umar and Anirban were apprehending threat to their safety and security during production before Patiala House court for remand proceedings.

Khalid and Bhattacharya had last week surrendered before Delhi Police after remaining in hiding for over a week. Two days earlier, when Kanhaiya Kumar was to be brought to the court, the same set of lawyers had thrashed journalists and JNU students and teachers.

Ashutosh’s co-accused in the case, incumbent JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and fellow students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, have all been arrested in connection with the case but the police said they were not planning to arrest Ashutosh as of now.

Besides these three, another pupils purportedly associated with the case are Ashutosh Kumar, Naga and Prakash.

The Delhi police told the court that they needed them in custody as the investigations were still on.

Khalid, Anirban, Ashutosh and two others had resurfaced on the campus last Sunday, following which Khalid and Anirban surrendered.

The authorities had released a lookout notice on February 20 against these students.

Later, the case was transferred to Delhi Police’s Special Cell and their police custody was again extended by a day. The apex court asked the petitioner to take consent of the Attorney General before hearing.
