JNU row: Univ recommends rustication of Kanhaiya, Umar, Anirban, 2 others

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday issued show-cause notice to 21 students involved in controversial February 9 event against the hanging Afzal Guru, after an enquiry panel found them guilty of violating norms.

The PTI report quoted unnamed officials as saying that the final decision will be taken by Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar and Chief Proctor A Dimri. Kanhaiya was released on bail from Tihar on March 3 while Umar and Anirban are still in judicial custody.

The Office of JNU’s Chief Proctor would take further action by issuing show cause notices to the concerned students including Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya, Kahaiya Kumar and ABVP’s Sourav Sharma, a university source said.

After the controversy over the February 9 event, eight students were suspended on February 12.

Members of the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) met Kumar over the issue and informed him that the JNUSU had passed a resolution against the HLEC and any decision taken by the committee would not be accepted by the students.

The Special Cell officials Monday visited the rooms of Khalid and Bhattacharya – in Tapti and Brahmaputra hostels, respectively – from where they seized their laptops as well as some documents, said sources.

According to sources present at the deans’ committee meeting, five students are to face rustication, “which means they will be asked to leave the campus and discontinue their studies”. On the basis of a preliminary report by the panel, the varsity had debarred these students from academic activity while allowing them to stay as guests in hostels till the inquiry proceedings were over.

The university had on March 11 revoked the academic suspension of eight students including Kanhaiya after completion of the probe by the five-member panel.

He had said, “They told us the suspension does not stand after midnight Friday, as the final report has been submitted”.

The committee has faced a series of hiccups since its constitution. “The high-level inquiry committee’s recommendations are based on the rules of discipline and proper conduct in the JNU”, an IANS report said quoting the university statement. While the varsity’s proctorial committee was first given the task to probe the issue, a day later it was replaced by a high-level committee. The duo were placed under arrest after they had surrendered in front of the Delhi Police which had, in February, registered a case sedition against six JNU students including the president of student union, Kanhaiya Kumar.
