Notices were issued after the National Human Rights Commission, took cognizance of media reports about the event where anti-national slogans were allegedly raised, leading to the arrest of JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar on sedition charges. Hundreds of police were deployed at a Delhi court where Kumar was set to appear after violence broke out there on Monday, with students, academics and journalists attacked when they turned out to see him.

Delhi journalists on Tuesday staged a protest march against the violence that took place in Patiala House Courts on Monday, where some of them as well as students were beaten up.

Television footage showed chaotic scenes as a frightened-looking Kumar was dragged inside by police, some carrying riot shields.

Kumar, 28, was arrested at a student rally last week held to commemorate the anniversary of the execution of a Kashmiri separatist over his role in an attack on the Indian parliament in 2001.

Metropolitan Magistrate Lovleen gave the ruling after Delhi Police said it did not need the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) any more for interrogation.

The lawyers waved Indian flags and chanted slogans like “glory to Mother India” and “traitors leave India”.

Asked whether he was giving a clean chit to Kumar, Bassi said “I am not giving a clean chit”.

“You can not say the situation went out of hands”, Bassi said.
