Joe Johnson waived by Nets after 3 1/2 seasons

Whatever the Brooklyn Nets have in store for the future after this current, abysmal season, they don’t include Joe Johnson. According to Stein, the Brooklyn Nets are working on a buyout with Joe Johnson that would leave the veteran, well-compensated swingman with his pick of employer heading into the post season. Nicknamed “Joe Jesus”, Johnson has started his fourth season with the Nets.

“The Nets want to thank Joe for his many contributions to the team and the organization”.

Johnson is making $24.9 million this season in the final year of a six-year, $124 million contract.

Johnson, 34, was known to be seeking a buyout of his contract and is interested in joining a playoff team for the stretch run.

Earlier this month, Cleveland.com’s Chris Haynes reported that in the event the Nets were to reach a buyout with Johnson, the Cavaliers would be his eventual landing spot. Johnson went on to average 14.7 points in 288 games for the Nets.

While the Nets were already cruising to a top-five pick, they just dumped one of their best scorers (Johnson is only averaging 11.8 points per game this season, but has a career 17-point scoring average) and a player with the second-best on-court net rating in their rotation. The Clippers would give Johnson a smaller chance to compete for a ring than Cleveland, and maybe Oklahoma City and Toronto, but there’s no denying the Clippers are one of the better second-tier contenders in the league, aka the non-Warriors/Spurs division.
