Joe Paterno tribute gets mixed reviews at Penn State

Despite myriad injuries throughout the game, Penn State avenged last season’s historic loss, toppling Temple 34-27 on Saturday at Beaver Stadium. The first video aired during a break early in the second quarter.

A fan stands outside of Beaver Stadium protesting the commemoration of Paterno’s first game. As soon as Paterno’s familiar image – shirt and tie, thick glasses and rolled-up trousers – appeared, fans erupted and kept cheering as DeVore read from a statement highlighting Paterno’s commitment to student-athletes and academics.

McSorley’s 52-yard dart to Chris Godwin, who ran a post route through soft spot in Temple’s zone showed that the feisty quarterback is more than just a player who will succeed with his legs and the short passing game.

No point spread information has been released, but MI is expected to be a heavy favorite at “The Big House” in Ann Arbor.

Multiple tributes aired on the video monitors during the game, which caused the same reaction each time.

Phillip Walker seemed to make all the right decisions Saturday, and ultimately couldn’t put enough points on the board to take down Penn State. The wall celebrated player and team accomplishments.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Organizers of a private reunion for football players coached by Joe Paterno will provide their own security for the Friday night event, Penn State spokesman Ben Manning said. Harris, who has been a vocal supporter of Paterno’s, called that “a good first step”. Lance Hamilton, who was a freshman on that team, holds two vivid memories of the 1982 season: being on the field for the final play of the Sugar Bowl and watching Paterno handle preparation before the game.

Penn State also honored Joe Paterno on the 50th anniversary of his first game.

That all happened, and when you factor in how much money Paterno filtered into the college, the football program and the community, how many jobs his success created and how many families lived and worked because of the empire he helped build, that has to mean something to the folks at Penn State.

In May, unsealed court documents said a victim complained to Paterno about Sandusky in 1976 and was rebuffed.

In May, University president Eric Barron said in a letter to the university’s community that he was “appalled by the rumor, innuendo and rush to judgment” surrounding the new allegations, adding that the claims had not been substantiated in court.

But celebrations of Paterno’s legacy have fueled debate over whether he should be praised in any way after his role in the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Paterno, who placed an emphasis on academics, is a source of pride for some Penn Staters.
